“As a student, it’s all you think about. Where will I work? How will I find a job?”, says Samantha Jorge, a veteran Career Support Peer (CSP) with the University of Guelph-Humber. “High school students need to think about networking. It’s something you hear a lot about, but may not really know how to do,” she explains.

Samantha is a fourth-year student in the Early Childhood program at the University whose job it is—as a CSP—to help fellow students with career-building tools. “Students find it’s easier to talk to us (current students) about career questions. It’s less daunting to approach us with fears and issues, and creates a casual, open discussion,” says Samantha.

The CSPs offer LinkedIn workshops to teach students how to create an effective profile, search for jobs, and use LinkedIn’s tremendous networking capabilities. Students usually ask for a personalized meeting after the workshop to review their profile and get more tutoring for LinkedIn one-on-one with a CSP.

The University of Guelph-Humber is known for offering work experience in every program, but many people don’t realize that we offer personalized career service support through all four years of study. All you have to do is make an appointment through Career & Placement Services. Other assistance includes mock interviews, resume writing, advice on dress code, creating business cards and getting the right resources for your career of interest.

With a student population of about 4,000 and an average class size of 49 students, the University’s close-knit community helps students network from year one. Samantha comments, “I strongly recommend that first-year students start networking with their professors right away. They can provide valuable job/career references. The profs here are friendly and easy to talk to.”
