Joining a campus club is a great way to meet new people and have fun – but in some cases, it’s a way to enhance your resume as well.

Take Humber’s Student Leadership Institute (SLI). Run by the college’s office of Student Success and Engagement, the SLI consists of several conferences and activities throughout the school year.

Students who are accepted into the program and complete all activities receive an Advanced Leadership Certificate from Humber.

“Students learn the core competencies of leadership, such as teamwork and communication” explains Jelena Dukic, Humber’s co-ordinator of student leadership programs. “The workshops are facilitated by staff and faculty, and tailored to be both relevant and inspiring.”

Participants in the last two-day conference were able to attend tailored workshops on leadership, communication skills, conflict management and self awareness – all capped by a banquet and dance featuring karaoke, a photo booth and fancy mocktails.

For participant Hong, a student in Humber’s Public Relations program, the event was inspiring.

“I’m pretty big on life lessons,” he explains. “It was nice to see [keynote speaker] Adam Kuhn convey that in his speech, which was engaging, funny and real. I’m going to carry those lessons with me beyond the weekend for sure.”

The SLI, which is free for students, is designed to encourage involvement in leadership activities on campus, such as starting a student club or joining the Humber Students’ Federation – but the benefits definitely extend off-campus.

“We tell students that this is an opportunity to develop skills that will benefit both their Humber experience and their eventual career,” says Dukic. “Many participants apply to be leaders in subsequent years – which makes their time at Humber better, and also looks great on a resume.”
