St. George'sThe leaders of St. George’s University’s School of Medicine in Grenada, West Indies understand the importance of medical students’ exposure to an international education, and instituted The Keith B. Taylor Global Scholars Program. Launched in 2007, the Program allows students who are accepted to St. George’s University to spend their first year of Basic Medical Sciences on the Northumbria University campus in Newcastle, England. This unique partnership gives a select group of students the opportunity to study in the United Kingdom, Grenada and the United States over the course of the curriculum.

The year spent in the United Kingdom is the same competitive program offered in Grenada, and, in addition, students have the experience of being immersed in the United Kingdom’s urban culture for a year.

Students who hold an undergraduate degree with a strong foundation in the basic sciences enroll in the four-year Program. Upon completion of their first year, these students receive a Diploma of Higher Education in Biomedical Sciences awarded by The School of Applied Sciences at Northumbria University. They then move to Grenada to finish their Basic Medical Science training and then participate in clinical training at one of St. George’s many affiliated teaching hospitals in the United States.

The Keith B. Taylor Global Scholars Program broadens students’ understanding of the differing cultures and intellectual lifestyles of the three host countries, while also giving them unparalleled insight into cross-cultural medical practices. It also further cements St. George’s dedication to increasing medical care in developing countries.

As St. George’s recognizes that the opportunity to attend school in a foreign country may be difficult for some due to financial constraints, they created the Global Medicine Scholarship Program. The Global Medicine Scholarship Program is committed to promoting a student body made up of diverse nationalities and cultural backgrounds specifically within the Keith B. Taylor Global Scholars Program, which in the future will contribute to the worldwide medical community. Partial scholarships are awarded to non-US students who exhibit academic excellence, demonstrate financial need, and who will return to their home countries as physicians dedicated to the enhancement of the countries’ medical care systems. These awards are grants-in-aid and do not have to be repaid.
