University of Prince Edward IslandAnxious about starting the new school year? Finding it tough to get back into the swing of things? Don’t worry—University faculty and staff are here to help you!

At the University of Prince Edward Island, the Webster Centre for Teaching and Learning provides student support and resources to help students achieve academic success. Its Pathways to Academic Success (PAS) program, which supports students one on one, offers the following “Smart Tips” for fall 2012:

Use your weekly planner— To keep track of your classes and assignments. This helps keep you organized and stress-free.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help— Visit your professor during office hours for extra help, or if you need a tutor, contact your school’s tutoring services to set something up early in the semester.

Go to class!— Attendance is half the battle when it comes to academic success. If you miss a class, get notes from the instructor or another student, and remember to let your professor know if you’re not able to attend.

Make the most of the day— Treat university like a “9-to-5” job. Go to the library between classes to read, do assignments, and rewrite notes. You will get much more accomplished and have more free time in the evenings and weekends.

Study every day— Plan to study for about two hours for every one hour of class time. Make time for daily, weekly, and monthly reviews of your notes, texts, and course syllabus.

Form a study group— Study groups are a great way to make learning more active. A group can help you understand an assignment, question, learn new concepts, study for tests and exams, or prepare for a presentation.

UPEI wishes all students the best for the 2012–13 academic year!
