Grant MacEwanThe first year of university or college can be intimidating and overwhelming for most new students, but with some thought and preparation, you will have a successful start to your post-secondary school experience.MacEwan University’s Student Success program has some tips to help.

Worried about being a small fish in a big pond? Most schools have orientations and workshops for new students, which are a great way to get familiar with your classmates and faculty members. Remember – most new students are feeling nervous just like you, so make a conscious effort to meet new people, both inside and outside the classroom. Get involved. Take part in school events, volunteer or join a club or team. You will feel more connected to your school and you’ll create great social networks, which come in handy when you’re looking for friendship or support. Visit your university/college’s advising or counselling department if you ever feel like you need help during your studies. They are there to help academically and personally.

Socializing and being connected through activities outside of the classroom are key to a balanced experience, but don’t forget the reason you’re in school. Stay on top of your studies by spreading out your assignments and establishing a regular study routine. Attend your classes, and make use of your class time and your instructors’ office hours to get clarification on concepts and assignments.

And remember to take chances. Challenge yourself to try something different. Post-secondary is the best time of your life to expand your horizons and explore new opportunities. For more information visit www.MacEwan.ca/StudentSuccess.
