September is an exciting time for both students and teachers -- new classes, new instructors and pupils, sometimes even new schools. Students enrolled in a Bachelor of Education (BEd) program have the unique experience of being both learners and educators simultaneously. Many people enrolled in a BEd program intend to work in the traditional school system, whether it be public or private, but a BEd can be used for more than teaching. A BEd degree not only prepares students to teach in a classroom -- it prepares them to take on leadership roles in all areas of life.

A BEd degree will appeal to people who value achievement, compassion, imagination, justice, kindness, knowledge, leadership, perseverance, teamwork, courage, vision, warmth, and celebration of life. Teachers are typically creative, hopeful, patient, and collaborative people. The skills learned in a BEd degree can be transferred to many different areas. A BEd degree prepares you not only to be a classroom teacher, but also for graduate study, consulting work, curriculum development, counselling, working in HR, teaching adult education, teaching English to immigrants in language programs, working as an educational technology representative, and many other career paths.

So, if you’re considering a BEd, be open to exploring all opportunities, whether they be in a traditional school setting or far removed from it. A BEd is a mobile degree -- you may be surprised where it can take you!
