Lakehead University receives $2.38 million in funding over four years for their project: Improving Access and Facilitating Systems Change for Palliative Care Among Underserved Populations. "Lakehead University is beyond grateful for the Government of Canada's significant investment in the research we're leading that will result in better access to quality palliative care for underserved populations, including people living in rural and remote communities. During the most difficult time of life when someone needs access to palliative care, that experience should be barrier-free and easy to navigate for patients and families. Lakehead is proud to contribute to this important work that will make a positive difference in so many people's lives." #LakeheadU had the privilege of hosting this year's 3MT® provincial finals at the Orillia Campus. Presenting complex research in an engaging, accessible, and compelling way in 180 seconds is no small feat, but each of the 12 graduate students made it look easy. Congratulations to Lakehead's Madeline Fabiano who finished in third place! The winner was Julia Tropak of Queen's University for her presentation, "Bacteria: Friend or foe?" Robert Jordan C. of Toronto Metropolitan University finished second for his presentation, "Building better processed foods, block by block." And, thank you to our adjudicators: Stephen Loftus, Carmine Stumpo, Katherine Killam, Nicole Norris, and Matthew Mahoney. Watch the Ontario 3MT® finals on our website: https://lnkd.in/gqeVyzR6

The Lakehead University Indigenous Student Services Centre organized an unreal opportunity for seventeen students, two faculty and three staff who left from Toronto and flew to Belize! They had a wonderful opportunity to be with Miss Lucia Ellis who shared wisdom she has learned over a lifetime, including plant knowledges, life stories and the journey of finding one’s purpose in life. They toured Cahal Pech Maya’s Ruins to see some of the Mayan temples and sacred places that Dr Awe and his archaeological team have uncovered, spent the afternoon learning about Maya(n) glyphs, writing their names & exploring the town of San Ignacio. Our accommodations Cahal Pech Village Resort, San Ignacio Belize are a great place to call home for a few days! #LakeheadU #LakeheadUniversity #thunderbay #tbay #mylakehead #indigenous #indigenousculture #belize #mayantemples

#LakeheadU researcher Dr. Lynn Martin, Chair and Professor in the Department of Health Sciences, received $2.38 million in funding for a project to improve the experience of, and access to, palliative care among underserved groups. Congratulations to Dr. Martin and the entire research team including co-investigators Dr. Ravi Gokani, Dr. Anna Koné, Dr. Katherine Kortes-Miller, and Dr. Elaine Wiersma.
#PalliativeCare is a critical part of Canada’s health care system. However, some people experience more challenges than others accessing palliative care, including people aged 85 and over, those with dementia, mental illness, intellectual or developmental disabilities, those from linguistic minority groups, those living in rural and remote areas, and those experiencing homelessness. The Government of Canada has announced $2.38 million in funding to Lakehead University for their project Improving Access and Facilitating Systems Change for Palliative Care Among Underserved Populations, with the goal of improving the experience of, and access to, palliative care among several underserved groups.
