What can be done to end gendered violence? Recent high-profile incidents of gender-based violence have once again raised calls for the issue to be treated as a national crisis. So, as tens of thousands of Australians rallied in cities and towns across the country, Contact asked #UQ experts, Dr Faiza El-Higzi, Dr Ella Kuskoff, Professor Cameron Parsell, Dr Deborah Walsh, Emeritus Professor Carole Ferrier, Associate Professor Nicole George and Dr Samara McPhedran, what can be done to finally put an end to gendered violence. Some key points from our experts include: ⚪Collective action – led by men, informed by cultural context, and adaptable to media dynamics – will drive meaningful change. ⚪While increased investment in shelters, services, support payments and protective orders is needed, the only real solution is for men to stop inflicting violence on women. ⚪Gender-stereotyping and a lack of positive role-modelling needs to be addressed in order to stop the exploitation and oppression of women at home and in the workplace. ⚪Governments must focus more on the gendered and racialised factors that impede effective implementation of state reforms. ⚪Recognising and addressing common factors with other types of homicide is a crucial component of any efforts to reduce intimate partner homicide. ➡️Read the full article (Content warning: this article discusses intimate partner violence): https://brnw.ch/21wJW7O

This week, UQ was proud to host the first of 5 national John Monash Leadership Series events to be held at universities across the country, in partnership with the General Sir John Monash Foundation. Andrew N. Liveris AO, President of the Board of the Brisbane Organising Committee for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, gave candid and inspirational advice on leadership at the launch event. Our Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Deborah Terry AC, welcomed the new program, saying that “effective leadership will be a key ingredient to solving our shared global challenges and seizing entirely new opportunities in the decades ahead. "This series of discussions exploring the approaches of five great Australian leaders will be a wonderful source of insight for those who aspire to lead and create meaningful change.” Read more about the series ➡ https://lnkd.in/gXNE38nr

After sitting idle and out of tune for 8 years, UQ's pipe organ has been restored to it's former glory! 🎶 The organ was played at the vast majority of the almost 400 graduation ceremonies between 1976 and 2002, when the Mayne Hall was repurposed to become The University of Queensland Art Museum. The UQ Art Museum, alongside the UQ School of Music, is working on a range of events to activate the organ. These will include bespoke artistic commissions to honour the legacy and history of the organ, while also engaging with the instrument in innovative ways to ensure its continued relevance to contemporary and future audiences. The organ will also be available for external hire as part of the Art Museum’s engagement strategy and its role as a unique events venue. 💜

  • When did know what career you wanted to pursue? For 2023 Indigenous Community Impact Award winner, Dr Alicia Veasey (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery '11), that moment happened early in her childhood. "I've always been interested in working in health. At the end of primary school, I wrote on my graduation certificate that I wanted to be an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Worker, like my Dad. What I didn’t realise at that time was the joy I would find in providing women-centred care, especially in gynaecology." Dr Veasey, a proud Torres Strait Islander woman, is now an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist with a subspeciality fellowship in Paediatric and Adolescent Gynaecology. She is Co-Chair of the Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Clinical Network at Queensland Health, where she provides leadership on systemic cultural safety and strengths-based reforms for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the health system. #UQAlumni #UQAlumniAwards
