Presenting each student in your course with a slightly different version of the same quiz deters academic dishonesty and thus increases the integrity of the assessment.

The Quizzes tool in Brightspace allows instructors to configure quizzes in a way that will present each student with a different version of the same quiz. In this session, various methods of randomizing a Brightspace quiz will be illustrated such as shuffling questions and answer choices; creating a question pool and populating a quiz (or a section within it) with a random selection of questions from the pool; and more. The function of the ‘Question Library’ will also be discussed.

Parallel computing is the business of breaking a large problem into tens, hundreds, or even thousands of smaller problems which can then be solved at the same time using a cluster of computers, or supercomputer. It can reduce processing time to a fraction of what it would be on a desktop or workstation, or enable you to tackle larger, more complex problems. It’s widely used in big data mining, AI, time-critical simulations, and advanced graphics such as augmented or virtual reality. It’s used in fields as diverse as genetics, biotech, GIS, computational fluid dynamics, medical imaging, drug discovery, and agriculture.

Prerequisites: Before you take this training you should…

• Be comfortable using the command line.
• Be able to understand a shell script and make simple edits to it.
• Know at least one programming language enough to be able to write a simple program.

This session will take place on:

• Tuesday, May 21st, 2:00 – 4:00 pm
• Thursday, May 23rd, 2:00 – 4:00 pm

All times above are in Atlantic time (UTC-3:00).

Each two-hour session includes lectures and learning exercises.

Participants must have a computer with a Mac, Linux, or Windows operating system (not a tablet, Chromebook, etc.). As with any on-line course, a headset and a second monitor will be of benefit.

Brightspace offers a range of tools that allow instructors to monitor student activity in a course such as their engagement with the course material or participation in discussions. Other Brightspace tools let you identify students who may be at risk (and those who are succeeding), and send those students automated yet personalized emails to help them stay motivated.

This session will focus on using the Class Progress tool to monitor student activity in Brightspace and using Intelligent Agents to help stay on the right track in their learning journey.

Mini-Med School is Back!

Are you interested in learning about health and medicine? Want to discover more about medical advancements and how they can affect you in the future? Now is your chance to expand your knowledge and become a “medical student” for six weeks!

About Mini-Med School
The Faculty of Medicine’s Mini-Med School began in February 2004 to forge stronger ties with the community and extend our school’s reach by sharing our medical faculty’s expertise. With medicine advancing rapidly, many people are increasingly concerned with maintaining good health and receiving the best treatment possible.

Each night, two members of the medical community will present on areas related to health and medicine. The seminars are intended to explore the scientific basis of topical medical issues, followed by a question and answer session. All information is presented in an easy-to-understand style. The intended audience will range from high-school students who may be interested in medicine as a profession to seniors with an interest in health and health-related topics.

Experience and participate in large group discussions on various topics presented by members of our medical community.

These sessions will run from April 24– May 29 and will be held in person at the Main Auditorium (T-Aud)  in the Faculty of Medicine Building and online (via Webex).

Note: The Mini-Med School educational program is best suited for Grades 10, and Up. Onsite (In-person) capacity is restricted to 300. We only accept credit cards for payments. We do not accept Visa Debit cards.

All fees are inclusive of HST.

The Marine Institute is investigating the development of a Marine Autonomous Test Zone and wants your input.

The Marine Institute invites residents of the Town of Holyrood and surrounding communities to an information and public consultation session to learn more about a proposed Marine Autonomous Test Zone in Holyrood harbour.

The session will take place on Thursday, May 23, from 6–7:30 p.m. at The Launch (Arthur W. May Building), 4 Northside Rd., Holyrood, N.L.

This test zone will allow for the deployment and operation of uncrewed marine vehicles, both above and below the surface, in a specific area under an approved safety management system.

The zone is being designed with other users in mind, so it will have minimal or no impact on commercial and recreational activities in the area.

Come to The Launch to hear more about the test zone, provide your feedback and learn about how the Marine Institute’s work is benefiting our oceans.
