As part of your course you’ll:
- Learn from a team of experienced and professional theatre and performance makers to produce exciting work for stage, galleries and festivals

You’ll be engaged in practical events in the city in theatres, galleries and more unusual sites. Our performing arts students and staff have also performed their work together at Latitude, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and Light Night here in Leeds.

For this reason we operate a contextual admissions policy, which means we take into account a range of additional factors when we assess a student’s application. Applicants who meet at least one of our contextual admissions criteria will be offered a place on this course with lower (predicted or achieved) UCAS Tariff Points than our published tariff (above).Our contextual admissions criteria are:
- Home postcode is in an area where few people go to University (POLAR4 quintile 1 or 2 area. This can be checked on the Office for Students website).

Your course is delivered through a number of modules, which will help you to plan your time and establish a study routine. Outside of your lectures, workshops and tutorials, a range of support is available to assist with your independent study. Our subject-specific librarians will be on hand to direct you to the specialist learning and study-skill resources. You’ll also be assigned an academic advisor to give you tailored feedback and support.
Teaching & Learning
Develop yourself as a performance and creative artist on this interdisciplinary degree as you study wider, practical notions of performance practice, including skills acquisition and development in theatre, live art, sound, voice and body. You will be able to develop meaningful and sustainable partnerships with the creative and cultural industries.

What you'll learn
This module will introduce you to key artistic movements, artists and performances. You'll explore, through practice, theatre, performance and dance lineages, and how these have impacted on contemporary modes of performance making and thinking.
Explore key concepts of making theatre through practice using studio spaces and in technical workshops. This module will provide the foundations for you to become an independent, creative and intelligent maker of theatre and performance.
Study a range of cultural performance practices that reflect the contemporary contexts of the creative industries. You'll look at culturally and historically important practitioners and movements to inspire your own performance making.
This module will introduce the importance of health and wellbeing and its relationship to artistic practice.
What you'll learn
Examine the dual role of the intelligent performance maker who is able to read performance effectively: both as a spectator (a thinking body) and as a maker of performance (a body that thinks). This module will enable you to develop a questioning and curious approach to performance analysis.
Your first opportunity to embark on a journey of self/group-determined practical study, you will learn how to creatively pool your practices toward the realisation of a creative performance project.
Explore the diverse range of written texts that may be generated specifically to be performed. You'll build a portfolio of short texts for performance, or 'Textracts', each focusing on a different approach to writing. You'll then select pieces of writing for performance and rehearse them independently for delivery at a 'Textracts' concert.
Examine the ways in which performance and art can be used by artists and protesters to make political statements. Drawing upon practitioners from the 20th and 21st Centuries, such as the Viennese Actionists, Guerrilla Girls, Pussy Riot, Banksy, and Extinction Rebellion, you'll make theatre and performance events that articulate your own political beliefs.

Discover the multiple career pathways within the professional creative sector that form a part of the organisational infrastructure that creative and educational practice.
What you'll learn
This module will provide the opportunity to pursue an independent research project that engages with the cultural and critical contexts of contemporary performance.
Work in close collaboration with a contemporary artist or practitioner of (inter)national standing to create an innovative and sophisticated performance product.
Consider your future self as a self-employed, freelance practitioner within the creative industries. You'll be encouraged to identify, plan and prepare for a portfolio career after graduation by recognising your own developmental needs.
The first of two modules during which you will develop your final performance work of the course. This module will involve an in-depth investigation of your practice, using the knowledge you have gained throughout the course. You will pool your practical experience to develop your final work, which will then be showcased in Lift Off 2.
This module will provide the opportunity to refine your material for final presentation and showing. You'll then contribute to a showcase of your work to an invited audience.

- Access to software, including five free copies of Microsoft Office 365 to install on your PC,laptop and MAC, and access to free high-end software via the Leeds Beckett remote app
- Loan of high-end media equipment to support your studies

- Study materials. We provide all core materials during your studies, including costumes or props on a case by case basis, although you may wish to purchase additional materials
In many cases, costs associated with your course will be included in your course fee. However, in some cases there are ‘essential’ additional costs (those that you will be required to meet in addition to your course fee), and/or ‘optional’ additional costs (costs that are not required, but that you might choose to pay). We have included those essential or optional additional costs that relate to your course, below.

You can book and borrow AV equipment through the media equipment service accessed online via the student hub and located in the library at each campus. Equipment includes: 360 Cameras, iPads, GoPros, MacBooks, portable data projectors, portable projection screens, flipchart stands, remote presenters, digital cameras and camcorders, SLR cameras, speakers, microphones, headphones, headsets, tripods, digital audio recorders and PC/laptops (a laptop loans service is provided on campus in the library on both campuses). Student laptops are also available from the laptop lockers located in the libraries.

My tutors were all practising artists and they really pushed me to develop myself within the current arts scene - I even negotiated a record deal that enabled me to release my EP after I graduated. One of my tracks was then named BBC 1Xtra Track of the Week. I'm now launching my third EP and every day my career is shaped by the varied skills I gained at University.
