Evaluation (GDE)

The Graduate Diploma in Evaluation program is perfect for new or mid-career professional evaluators. You’ll build knowledge and skills to become an expert in evaluation and performance measurement, and work with a client to develop and execute an evaluation.

Note: We are not admitting students directly into the Graduate Diploma in Evaluation. All students interested in this program should first apply for admission to the Graduate Certificate in Evaluation program.

Outcomes

Students in this program will:

  • build knowledge and skills in essential methodologies, theoretical approaches and applications in evaluation and performance measurement
  • apply a working knowledge of both qualitative and quantitative evaluation methodologies
  • build the evaluator competencies identified by the Canadian Evaluation Society as part of professionalizing evaluation practice in Canada
  • build an understanding of the role that economic analysis plays in evaluation, including cost-benefit and cost-effectiveness analysis
  • provide students with a hands-on understanding of the application of evaluation methodologies in an actual evaluation project by working with a client to complete a practical, useable evaluation

Find a supervisor

Although you’re not required to find a supervisor before applying to our diploma program, during your studies in your Graduate Certificate in Evaluation you will be expected to be familiar with School of Public Administration faculty contacts and review potential supervisors.

When you are admitted to the diploma program, we will connect you to a supervisor based on the area of research topic for your evaluation project.

Admission requirements

Please note that students are not admitted directly into the Graduate Diploma in Evaluation. They must first be admitted to the Graduate Certificate in Evaluation and complete the required coursework.

  • Completion of the Graduate Certificate in Evaluation
  • Completion of a 4-year bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) from an institution recognized by UVic
  • Equivalent of a minimum B (5.0 GPA) average in the final two years of your degree
  • Completion of a course in research design or research methods

If your first language is not English, you must provide proof of language proficiency. Learn more about language requirements, including allowable exemptions and tests.

As part of your application for the Graduate Diploma in Evaluation, you must submit:

  • at least two assessment reports or letters of reference
  • official copies of all post-secondary transcripts
  • a current resumé
  • a letter of intent explaining why you’re interested in this program and how it relates to your career plans, personal values and goals
  • your official GMAT (Graduate Management Aptitude Test) scores if you don’t have a Canadian undergraduate degree

Graduate students registered in full-time programs are automatically considered for a fellowship. This is based on a qualifying GPA.

Individual award amounts may vary depending on the program.

UVic Fellowship Awards

  • Up to $17,500 per year (master's)
  • Up to $20,000 per year (PhD)

UVic Graduate Awards

  • Up to $10,000 per year (master's and PhD)

Eligibility

  • The minimum requirement for funding consideration is a A- average on the last two years of course work
  • Full-time registration (3.0 units) for UVic Fellowship holders and at least part-time registration (1.5 units) for UVic Graduate Award holders
  • Full-time registration for students registered with the Centre for Accessible Learning (CAL) is 1.5 units

You can also join the co-op program or work as a research or teaching assistant.
