Public Health (DipPH)

The Graduate Diploma in Public Health (DipPH) is offered by the School of Public Health and Social Policy in the Faculty of Human and Social Development.

This graduate diploma program prepares you for similar career roles as our Master of Public Health (MPH) program and follows the same curriculum, with four fewer courses.

You will take classes with MPH students and complete a culminating report. There is no thesis option in this program. You'll choose an area of focus in social policy or Indigenous health studies.

The DipPH is completed full-time in 20 months (5 academic terms). Part-time study is also possible.

Note: You must complete your practicum in Canada or the United States.

Outcomes

Students in this program will:

  • demonstrate knowledge of public health principles including ethical, legal and social debates impacting the health of populations
  • question and explain how public health policies and other interventions have interacted with determinants of health and health inequities
  • effectively engage and collaborate with communities to address public health issues, including upholding community leadership and self-determination
  • bridge Indigenous and western understandings of health and wellbeing
  • apply public health research strategies and evidence-informed approaches to the design, implementation and evaluation of community-based initiatives
  • effectively use knowledge translation and dissemination strategies for professional and non-professional audiences
  • demonstrate leadership skills and cultural humility when engaging in public health-related decision making on an inter-professional team

Admission requirements

  • Completion of an undergraduate degree from an institution recognized by UVic.
  • A minimum B+ (6.0) average (77-79%) in the last two years (30 units) leading to the undergraduate degree.

If your first language is not English, you must provide proof of language proficiency. Learn more about language requirements, including allowable exemptions and tests.

  • Completion of an undergraduate statistics course at the second-year level or above focusing on data analysis (not research methods) with a grade of B or above, within 10 years of program entry date
  • Two assessment reports from at least two academic or professional references. You will submit their names and email addresses when you submit your application. They may also write a letter of reference as part of the assessment report.
  • Feel free to submit any other evidence of suitability for admission you feel is relevant (e.g., academic records from non-degree courses).
  • If accepted, you must provide proof of a criminal record check for the jurisdiction in which you will be completing the program.
