Program Summary

Do you have a desire to learn more about music through a social, cultural and historical lens? The Bachelor of Arts in Music allows you to study a wide range of topics from the history of Western art music to Canadian and Indigenous music and culture, to jazz, pop and rock, digital and world musics.

The degree consists of an intensive study of non-performance-based courses in music and culture: from the historical past to the present-day music industry, from musicology to ethnomusicology. It allows a wide choice of options in subjects and will leave you with a solid understanding of music and how it has impacts our everyday lives.

Please note: The BA in Music is not a performance degree. It does not include individual instruction in performance or require an audition for entry. Theory, ear training, recitals or ensemble work are not requirements of the program. For performance-based program in music, please see the Bachelor of Music.

The Carleton Advantage

Carleton music students are well-prepared for advanced studies in a range of areas and have gone on to post-graduate studies and careers in musicology, arts management, cultural policy, communications, law, radio, arts journalism, education and museology. Third and fourth-year music students may be eligible for a practicum placement with partner organizations in the community. Students have earned course credits working in the areas of education, digital restoration and cataloguing, music therapy and social-related work, recording studios, music management and digital promotion, and non-profit music industry advocacy.

The program offers studies in Western art music (historical and contemporary), as well as in Canadian and Indigenous music and culture, jazz, popular music and music of the world’s peoples.

You will work closely with a faculty of respected music scholars in small classes and develop the critical tools to engage the kaleidoscope of music that deeply shapes our everyday lives.

You can access a wealth of academic and cultural resources on and off campus. Carleton’s library features the largest collection of Canadian musical scores outside of the Canadian Music Centre, and extensive hard copy and digital monographs, among others.

You will have access to world-class research and performance institutions in the nation’s capital including Library and Archives Canada, the Canadian Museum of History, the National Gallery of Canada and the National Arts Centre.
