Topics covered

The subjects of leadership and logistics are fundamental areas in the Maritime management master’s programme. The courses included in the programme plan handle topics such as project management, organization and strategy, quality management, maritime law, AI and digitalisation, intermodal transport, social and environmental sustainability.

Career

There is a growing need for competent and educated leaders, both onboard ships and in onshore organisations. Graduates from the programme can apply for management positions at companies in the shipping industry within the fields of maritime logistics, ship management and strategic management.

Many of our graduates start their industrial career in logistics in areas such as cargo management, freight planning, ship broking, operations management, health, safety, environment and quality and information technology. Some of our graduates focus on R&D development and become different types of managers at regulatory bodies such as the coast guard, port organisations, flag state administrations and insurance companies as underwriters or claims adjustors connected to the maritime industry.

You will also be able to also pursue an academic career as a PhD student in logistics, navigation and IT.

Research

Chalmers has a strong position in maritime research and education, with research both within the department of Mechanics and maritime studies and Lighthouse (Swedish maritime competency centre). We also have substantial networks with other research bodies on an international level and are active partners in a lot of projects funded by the European Union.

In the research conducted at Chalmers, we corporate both nationally and internationally with other universities, research institutes, regulatory bodies and industrial partners. Researches and students have been active partners in several projects funded by the European Union and by national or regional funding organisations.

Some international research projects worth mentioning are SAFEMODE which focuses on human factors in the development of safe and efficient shipping, and the AUTOBarge project which focuses on autonomous barges for smart inland shipping. In addition to these, students have been involved in research projects such as the KOMBI-P project with focus on social, economic and environmental combined transport in the Swedish archipelago.

Three units in the division of Maritime studies conduct research connected to maritime management.

  • Technical and maritime management focuses on teaching and research within  cargo management, efficient and social sustainable shipping, mechanical engineering, law and logistics.
  • Nautical studies works with navigation, safety and user-centred design of systems for regulatory support and safe and efficient operational procedures, as well as big data management. Increased demands on digitalization within the shipping industry, not only on complex socio-technical systems but also within the education and training of future operators.
  • Maritime environmental sciences examine the environmental impact from shipping to aid decision support for maritime stakeholders. The research is interdisciplinary within areas such as future marine fuels, energy efficiency, and emissions.
