Who’s a good candidate for a master’s in medical nutrition?

Ideal candidates for this program have earned a bachelor’s degree in science and plan to enter a health care role or advanced professional schools such as medical school, dental school, nursing and more. You may also be a practicing physician or nurse who’s interested in gaining a deeper understanding about how diet impacts a patient’s health. Additionally, this program is better suited for medical practitioners rather than health care administrative staff.

Please note, this online medical nutrition master’s program does not provide a pathway to become a registered dietician (RD) or dietitian nutritionist (RDN). Although, if you’re on the path toward an advanced medical schooling program, you can utilize this degree to improve the competitiveness of your application.

The skills you’ll develop in this program

In this program, you’ll learn how to assess and prescribe nutrition practices to improve a patient's health and prevent diseases. You’ll also gain a strong understanding of how to leverage testing strategies and data to research new nutrition techniques to apply in clinical practices. Additional skills include:

  • Analyze research evidence to obtain disease-specific nutritional information and recommendations.
  • Collaborate with registered dietitians to provide medical nutrition therapy as part of a patient care team.
  • Evaluate research evidence for the most accurate, current general and disease-specific nutritional information and recommendations.
  • Use patient information to craft individual nutrition management plans focused on optimal health and risk factor reduction.

How does this program compare to a clinical nutrition master’s?

Both medical nutrition and clinical nutrition master’s programs provide graduate-level coursework that emphasizes reading and interpreting nutrition research literature to support evidence-based practice and better outcomes for patients and clients.

Key differences:

  • Medical nutrition leans more toward general nutrition care and education for patients and clients who don’t require medical nutrition therapy provided by a registered dietitian nutritionist.
  • Clinical nutrition focuses more on advanced nutrition support such as enteral and parenteral nutrition, nutrition for special clinical populations, as well as advanced physical assessment of hospitalized patients as part of medical nutrition therapy.

Therefore, a clinical nutrition master’s is geared toward registered dietitians and those currently working in a clinical setting who have a bachelor’s degree and want to earn a master’s.

Will my diploma say 'online'?

No, Arizona State University’s diplomas don’t specify whether you earn your degree online or in person. All diplomas and transcripts simply say “Arizona State University.”
