The University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) is located in the provincial capital of Canada's smallest province. Its small size and location in a mixed rural/urban environment contribute to its distinctive character. Although one of Canada's youngest universities, UPEI builds on the history and architecture of its predecessor institutions.
In a recent publication of the top 50 research universities in Canada, UPEI ranked third among all Canadian undergraduate universities for the third year running and top in the Atlantic region with an increase in sponsored research income of 35.7% over the previous year (Re$earch Infosource 2005).
UPEI’s four faculties (arts, education, science, and veterinary medicine) and two schools (business and nursing) offer a wide range of programs and degrees to approximately 4,400 undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students. Home to multiple Canada Research Chairs, a Canada Excellence Research Chair in Aquatic Epidemiology, endowed or sponsored research chairs, and 3M Teaching Award-winners, UPEI offers its students access to over 1,100 exceptional faculty and research staff.

The University of Prince Edward Island provides accommodation for up to 440 students in three different residence buildings on campus. Each of our Residence halls is unique in structure, traditions, and lifestyle options, but all offer the opportunity for students to experience the best that residence life has to offer. Prospective students can choose between Bernardine Hall, Bill and Denise Andrew Hall and Blanchard Hall.

The First Year Advisement (FYAC) is a service set up on the UPEI campus where incoming first year students can plan for their upcoming year with the help of academic advisors. Students will learn about degrees, requirements, courses, the calendar, campus life and other general information about the University. We also have the New Student Orientation program (NSO), which is an awesome time to meet new people and to learn everything you need to know about the campus, where your classes are, how to set up your e-mail account, how to use the bookstore and library, as well as learn about the various supports and services available on campus throughout the academic year. You’ll learn all of this while having great fun with the many energy packed activities and celebrations throughout your first week of university.
Whether you are just beginning to think about a career path, or you already have something in mind, staff in the Career Services can help you design realistic career paths and plan successful job searches. Career Services is located in the Robertson Library Annex.

UPEI athletics offers programs in intercollegiate athletics (Panther Sport), club sports, intramural, and recreation opportunities for teams and individuals. UPEI Panther Sport is a member of the Atlantic University Sport and the Canadian Interuniversity Sport. We offer regularly scheduled competitions in men’s and women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, men’s hockey, men’s and women’s rugby, and men’s and women’s basketball.
The Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre houses a two lane walking/jogging track, racquetball, squash, basketball, volleyball, badminton and wallyball courts, an aerobics room, and locker rooms with saunas. The two new additions are the fitness centre room with some new additions such as life fitness equipment, tread mills and a hammer strength system, and the synthetic turf sports field.
UPEI has clubs for every area of interest. Some examples include Anthropology/Sociology, Astronomy Club, Business Society, Biology Club, Chemistry Club, Debating Society, Economics Society, Education Society, Engineering Society, French Club, History Society, Home Economics Club, Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, Math/Computer Science Society, Music Society, Physics Club, Psychology Club, Religious Studies Society, Society of Atlantic Veterinary Students, Theatre Society and WUSC.
Students have full Internet access. Residence rooms are linked to UPEI fibre optic network. All students are provided with Novell LAN access with over 225 microcomputers available in public and departmental microcomputer laboratories and clusters. Student laser, colour laser, and draft printing available. Dial up accounts for home access to the Internet are available for faculty, staff, and students.
The Chaplaincy Centre holds masses throughout the week. The Steel Recital Hall is a concert and theatre facility, and seats 209.
The Mature and Part-time University Students Association (MAPUS) is dedicated to ensuring that mature and part-time students at UPEI have a positive experience. This is accomplished by maintaining a lounge where students are welcomed and feel comfortable, offering services and activities specific to their needs, providing a staff resource person to assist students, and acting as an advocate for all mature and part-time students at UPEI. For students with disabilities, UPEI strives to provide them with a high quality of education. The Teaching and Learning Centre is available to assist faculty and staff with strategies to help students with disabilities. The Adaptive Technology Resource Centre also offers equal access to all students through adaptive technology.

Students have the possibility of participating in summer or full-year study abroad programs. The Department of Modern Languages has a summer program in Salamanca, Spain and students of Asian studies can obtain internships in Asian countries.
A campus tour is the best way of checking out UPEI if you're thinking about attending. We offer year round student led tours as well as an opportunity to sit in on a class, enjoy a delicious meal in our dining hall, meet a professor, speak with an admissions advisor, chat with current students, spend a night in our residences (October to March), and try out our sports facilities.
