The Nova Scotia Agricultural College (NSAC) in Truro, Nova Scotia is a university boasting unique programs, outstanding facilities, and hands on experience and training. Celebrating its centennial year in 2005, this university has evolved to become an internationally respected institution, providing quality education in the areas of science and agriculture. Located one hour from Halifax, NSAC maintains a small school atmosphere for its 760 students who benefit from small classes and personalized attention from their professors. NSAC offers students a full service campus with residences, dining hall, athletic centre, pool, and postal service. The campus community provides for an active student lifestyle through involvement in clubs, as well as varsity and intramural athletics, including volleyball, soccer, basketball, rugby, badminton, and woodsmen. NSAC has a strong scholarship program, with one in three students being a scholarship recipient and at least $1,000.00 guaranteed to all students with a minimum admission average of 80%. A combination of high quality teaching, research opportunities, and hands on experience makes NSAC graduates highly skilled and desired by employers across Canada and beyond. Undergraduate and graduate level degrees at NSAC are awarded in association with Dalhousie University.

NSAC offers Bachelor of Science (Agr.), Master of Science, Bachelor of Technology, and Technology diplomas in the following areas of study: Business, Economics, Animal Science, Aquaculture, Bio-Environmental Systems Management, Environmental Sciences, Plant Science, Applied Science, Environmental Horticulture, Engineering, Pre-Veterinary Medicine, Equine, Companion Animal, Farm, Dairy Farm, and Food Retail.

On Campus Housing

Approximately 360 students can be accommodated in three residences. Of these, 175 are in private rooms and the balance is two people per room. An approximately equal number of male and female students live in residence. A large percentage of new students from beyond the Truro area can obtain residence accommodation, if they request it within the time specified in the letter of acceptance. Residence fees include a meal plan of either 14 or 19 meals per week.

Off Campus Housing

Off-campus housing is available at reasonable rates. Price ranges for single and double apartments are approximately $450.00 to $600.00 per month (utilities included). There is no public bus service, but most students find accommodations within a twenty minute walk of the campus.

Incoming Students

Student Services at NSAC provides new students with orientation sessions and supplies tutors at no charge. The Student Union organizes events to introduce students to campus and to one another, and to encourage school spirit. All students are provided with an academic advisor, as well as the opportunity to obtain tutors free of charge.

Career Planning

Workshops on career awareness, job search techniques, resume and interview workshops, and assigned faculty counsellors are provided. A career fair is held on campus so students may liaise with industry representatives and potential employers.

Sports

Our teams have a long tradition of excellence and coaching that pushes athletes to achieve, both physically and personally. Membership in the Atlantic Colleges Athletic Association (ACAA) and the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) gives athletes a chance to compete regionally for a chance at the national title. Our teams have won regional titles and competed in national competitions all over Canada and NSAC has been host to several national championships.

Clubs

The NSAC Student Union promotes and supports clubs and committees covering interests as diverse as drama, social and environmental awareness, economics, equestrian, and yearbook. Discipline specific groups like the Engineering Club and the Animal Science/Pre-Vet Club allow students to pursue their interests beyond the classroom.

Information Technology

The campus has one of the most favorable student/computer ratios (4:1) in Atlantic Canada. Seven fully supported and networked computer labs give students campus wide access to all software, personal files, and the Internet. The campus is connected through a fibre optic network and all students receive an account on the Novell Academic Network without cost. Full access to the Internet is provided using Microsoft Windows clients. Accounts on Unix or VMS systems are available if required. Library collections are accessible online and all residence rooms are connected to the campus fibre network.

Cultural

Increasingly, students from all over the world choose an NSAC education. The International Students' Association brings international and Canadian students together to share worldviews through trips, seminars, dinners, and other events. The group also provides advisors who help international students adjust to campus life, adapt to Nova Scotia, and understand Canadian culture and customs.

Special Services

All academic buildings, library, athletic centre, and dining hall are accessible for people with mobility limitations. The library is equipped with zoom text readers for most types of resource materials. Daycare is also available on campus.

The Nova Scotia Agricultural College is affiliated with Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Our Bachelor of Science (Agriculture) degrees are awarded in association with Dalhousie University.

International linkages and exchanges with Writtle College, UK; University of Nitra, Slovak Republic; Czech Agricultural University, Czech Republic; Universidade de Santa Catarina, Brazil; EARTH, Costa Rica; and Hunan Agricultural University, China (PRC).
