DescriptionLanguage, Identity and Society: language is essential in shaping who we are as people and the kind of society we live in. In this course you will explore the history of English from the distant past, discover how children acquire language and grow up as particular kinds of people, and investigate the role of language in shaping gender, class, race and society. The journey of discovery stretches across the United Kingdom, where you will examine dialects from Cornwall to Scotland, and across the world, learning about how English changes as it spreads across all continents.

You will gain skills in analysing discourse to gain insights into the society around you, and the practical language skills help shape that society and become the person you want to become.
