Description | Atmospheric sciences is the comprehensive study of the physics, chemistry, and dynamics of the earth's atmosphere, from the earth's surface to several hundred kilometers altitude. Also known as meteorology, applications of this field include weather forecasting, air quality, and weather-related clean energy. Research covers phenomena ranging in scales from the smallest cloud particles to the global circulation, and uses tools including laboratory studies, field experiments, statistical techniques, computer modeling, and theoretical analysis. Atmospheric science is a relatively young field, where research is addressing many fundamental questions on weather predictability, climate variability, chemical and radiative characteristics of cloud particles, turbulent flow over complex terrain, and interactions with the biosphere. Combined Honours programs are especially demanding and especially valuable for a good student who seeks breadth as well as depth. | | |
