DescriptionStatistics is the art and science of applying mathematical ideas to obtain useful information in the face of uncertain data. Statisticians plan data collection methods, monitor the processing of data, and advise on the interpretation and limitations of results. The Statistics program is designed to provide the student with the basic tools used in statistical analysis. The Honours program also includes an introduction to the theoretical dimension of statistics required for advanced studies.

Economics covers subjects like the environment, law, federal-provincial relations, and the family, as well as more obvious subjects like prices, international trade, interest rates, unemployment and income. Carleton’s economics department has particular strengths in international, public, and industrial economics. While the public- and private-sector demand for economists is growing, their supply is shrinking. Ottawa-based Statistics Canada is just one example of the many governmental and private-sector organizations looking for the rigorous training and highly developed skills of Carleton economics graduates.
