Description:

As an art form, film has the power to entertain, upset, inspire, shock, and educate. As an industry, it employs millions of people around the world, generating billions of dollars for producers, distributors, exhibitors and corporate partners. And for audiences and fans movies are vital components of all our everyday lives. We go on dates to the cinema, stay in to watch Netflix, argue about films we love or hate, and follow the lives of movie stars on social media and in celebrity gossip columns. Our Film Studies BA invites you to learn how film, television and other screen entertainment shape (and are shaped by) the world we live in, and equips you with the tools you need to work in exciting, creative, demanding jobs.

The course will develop your abilities to analyse, research and write persuasively about a rich variety of films, shows and filmmakers, from the latest superhero blockbusters through to quirky indie movies, world cinema, and amateur YouTube releases. But the course places a particular emphasis on contemporary film and television – an increasingly global industry in which content creators are constantly adapting to rapid technological, economic and cultural change. With our wide range of options, you have the power to shape the degree to your exact interests and passions, from film and television production to film journalism, promotional campaigning. Along the way, you’ll be taught and supported by enthusiastic, internationally renowned professors, researchers and media practitioners, and working in industry standard production facilities. Whether you fancy yourself as a budding filmmaker, marketer, festival programmer, critic, or something else entirely, choosing our Film Studies programme will help you to develop an extensive, highly transferable set of skills that will open doors to a huge number of careers in the creative sector and beyond.
