This is the only graduate degree program in Canada dedicated to training professionals in voice, speech and text instruction.
Some highlights include:
- Studies in the medical side of voice with selected courses through the UofA's Speech Pathology and Audiology Department
- Intensive Training with full access to Betty Moulton and David Ley’s teaching and coaching - two of Canada's foremost voice, speech and text specialists
- Ample opportunities to teach and coach in all divisions of the Department of Drama (and in many other departments University-wide) over the two years of study, including theatrical and public speaking coaching |

An undergraduate degree in theatre or a related art form is required, along with substantial experience creating and interpreting theatre in professional or community settings. The candidate needs to contact the MFA Theatre Practice Coordinator, who will identify a faculty advocate (specialist in his/her proposed area of study) to advise on his/her application.
Successful applicants have an established background in their area of study, and are seeking enhancement of technical skills, artistic approaches and research methodology. We recommend that students considering the MFA in Theatre Practice have a strong record of performance practice before applying. The program is aimed at mature artists who are interested in deepening or redirecting an already existing practice. |

• 3 letters of recommendation
• Letter of intent outlining why you want to teach voice, speech and text, where you see yourself after this program, and anything else you can say to let us know about your ambitions, skills, experiences, and interests--include a description of your previous work as a teacher and coach in a university, college or professional theatre context
• Portfolio which includes reviews or commentaries on your work in performance, coaching or teaching
• Please submit directly to the department a DVD of your teaching and coaching an actor or a class. Include exercises or activities (vocal or speech oriented) that develop some aspect of the actor's vocal life. Include some work on the application of this work to text in your coaching. Please keep it under 15 minutes. |
