Careers:Mathematicians, Statisticians and Actuaries

Description:

Mathematics is a central and important component of human culture, which helps us solve a wide range of 21st century problems. As well as supporting innovation and progress in science, engineering, technology, finance and economics, it aids organisational decision-making. This is through modelling and predicting outcomes - from community health to the length of shop queues. The widespread availability of big data sets has led to increased demand for graduate mathematicians. There is also a marked shortage of mathematics teachers.

Accredited by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA), on this course you will develop a strong foundation in advanced mathematical and statistical concepts and methods. You will apply these to assess and solve real world problems including those involving scheduling, decision-making, simulation and modelling, and in areas such as industry, finance and healthcare. In your final year, you can specialise your programme of study by choosing the options modules in which you are most interested. There are second and third year options which involve work-based learning in a school environment, these modules provide an opportunity to you to consider postgraduate teacher training.
