Redeemer University College

Program Information

School:Redeemer University College
Field of Study:Chemistry, General
Description:Chemistry is the fascinating study of the “building blocks” of matter by which we seek to understand the nature of the material world, seeking answers to such questions as What is matter composed of? How is matter organized? How does matter behave? Furthermore, chemistry is also about learning how to make new forms of matter out of the raw materials found in creation (How can matter be transformed?) and is therefore a profoundly important culture-making activity: think of the impact of modern medicine and sanitation, fertilizers and pesticides, plastics and metallurgy, materials that power computers and the internet, fossil fuels and emerging clean energy technologies – all of which have arisen out of chemical innovations.

Through your studies of chemistry at Redeemer, you will cultivate a sense of wonder and awe at how God’s creation is structured and organized. You will develop a rich understanding of the role of chemistry in shaping the modern world. You will learn what it means to care for all of God’s creation as you wrestle with the fact that chemistry has contributed to – but also holds the promise of solutions to – many of the environmental and human health challenges of the 21st century. Finally, in intimate-sized classes and labs where you are known by your professor, though innovative guided inquiry and project-based learning approaches, complemented by an abundance of hands-on experience in our well-equipped labs and research experiences during the summers and/or in your final year, you will gain the knowledge, understanding, and skills to be prepared to make significant and meaningful contributions to the needs of our world through chemistry.
