Description:This program combines the fundamentals of chemical theory with the necessary practical laboratory work for employment in chemical industries and plants as well as in the environmental sector. Building from a strong grounding in basic scientific principles obtained during the first year of the program, the student is trained in sophisticated chemical instrumentation techniques ready for employment in analytical laboratories. Courses in process instrumentation and industrial processes such as pulp and paper, extractive metallurgy and water treatment prepare the student for work operating and troubleshooting computer-controlled industrial processes. Senior courses in chemical engineering prepare the student to help the engineering team improve on existing programs and develop new ones. Emphasis is placed on hands-on, practical laboratory training to make the graduate immediately useful to potential employers.

Students will be ready to write the new mandatory Provincial exams under Regulation 435/93 to qualify as Ontario Water and Wastewater Operators, Level I and the exams under Regulation 459/00 as Water Quality Analyst, Level I. They will also be well-trained in WHMIS, industrial safety rules and the Operational Safety and Health Act.

For graduates of the new curriculum (OSS): Ontario Secondary School Diploma (30 credits) or equivalent or mature student status, including: - any grade 12 English (C), (U) or (M) - any grade 12 mathematics (C) or (U) (MCT4C) is highly recommended) - any grade 11 or 12 chemistry (C) or (U) Recommended: - any grade 12 physics (C) or (U) - computer competency in relevant software. For graduates of the old curriculum (OS:IS): Ontario Secondary School Diploma (30 credits) or equivalent or mature student status, including: - 2 senior level English (general or advanced) - 2 senior level mathematics (general or advanced) - any senior level chemistry (general or advanced) Recommended: - any senior level physics (general or advanced) - computer competency in relevant software
