Description:The Music program gives students a thorough grounding in the four fundamental areas of music instruction – theory, general musicianship, history and performance – and allows them to focus on specific areas of interest, such as music education, history or theory.

The Diploma is intended to recognize a concentration and achievement in the area of music performance. Students should contact the Academic Counsellor for Music in the School of the Arts for direction on completing the requirements.

Applicants are required to have at least six Grade 12 U/M level courses, including: ENG4U.

Test Scores:
  • International English Language Testing System (academic or immigration) [min. 6.5] or Michigan English Language Assessment Battery [min. 85] or Cambridge English for Speakers of Other Languages: Certificate in Advanced English [min. 176] or Canadian Academic English Language Assessment [min. 70] or Test of English as a Foreign Language (Internet Based) [min. 86]

Students who have been asked to meet McMaster’s English Language Proficiency requirement must demonstrate English language proficiency by achieving the minimum requirements as specified by McMaster: IELTS: 6.5, CAE: 176, PTE: 60, CAEL: 70, MELAB: 85, TOEFL (iBT): 86

Additional Admission Requirements:
    Applicants must contact the School of the Arts to arrange for an audition, which will include an interview, a written theory exam, an ear test, and a performance of pieces of your choice. Students concentrating in jazz must complete an audition demonstrating equivalent experience in jazz performance. Please see the program web page for details.
