Description:

The Ph.D. graduate will be expected to function as a leader in the profession who can direct and carry out independent research. The students will, through course work, complete a comprehensive examination and a research thesis: demonstrate the ability to integrate scientific principles and theory in the solution of health care problems; communicate effectively in educational and professional settings; complete at least one required and two selected half courses, as well as a Doctoral Seminar; plan, develop, and carry out research which makes an original contribution to nursing knowledge; present research results both orally and through peer reviewed publication; and complete and defend a written thesis.

    Applicants are required to have a Master's degree in Nursing or demonstrated readiness to transfer from the McMaster thesis-based M.Sc. to the Ph.D. degree within 24 months from entry into the M.Sc. program. Applicants are also required to have completion of a Master's in Nursing level research thesis or equivalent (e.g. the candidate has already conducted funded research).
    Test Scores:
    • Test of English as a Foreign Language (Internet Based) [min. 92] or Test of English as a Foreign Language (Paper Based) [min. 580] or Test of English as a Foreign Language (Computer Based) [min. 237] or International English Language Testing System (academic or immigration) [min. 7.0]
    Application Notes : Applicants whose native language is not English will be required to submit an official copy of their TOEFL score, or other evidence of competency in English is required. A minimum TOEFL (iBT) score of 92 (580 on the paper-based TOEFL test or 237 on the computer-based TOEFL test) is needed for the Faculty of Health Sciences. Students taking the IELTS are required to achieve a minimum score of 7. Equivalent scores on other recognized tests may also be considered. Each of these scores are only valid for 2 years. Students who have completed an Academic ESL program through Canadian academic institutions may petition to have this considered in lieu of TOEFL. Applicants may be exempted from this requirement if they have completed a university degree at which English is the language of instruction.
