Description:

Alcohol and drug abuse is a growing problem in our society. An increasing number of people are seeking help in treating their addiction problems. Similarly, there is an increasing number of people working in the social services and related fields who are seeking additional training in order to become more effective with their client groups. The part-time (nine-month) Substance Abuse Counselling certificate program is designed to help professionals who recognize their own limitations and strengths and wish to improve their knowledge and skills. Students will gain knowledge about alcohol and drug dependencies, techniques for working with clients with dependencies, and knowledge and skills related to specific client groups. Intervention skills will be developed on individual, group, and family levels.

Our program will help working professionals who recognize their own limitations and strengths, and wish to improve their knowledge and skills or specialize in the substance abuse counselling and concurrent disorders fields. It is designed as a post-graduate program for people who hold certificates, diplomas, or degrees in related fields (chemical dependency, human services, social work, education, corrections, health care, etc.). Many educational institutions give credit for some of the courses if you should consider moving on to graduate degrees. It may also be taken as part of a degree program (Bachelor of General Studies, BA in Psychology, BA in Adult Education, etc.).
