Description:

Master of Arts students will gain a world-class education that lays the foundation for further study at a doctoral level, or for professional employment. Recent research topics have included offence specialization among juvenile delinquents; Chinese social clubs; women athletes’ perception of coaches; bisexual identity and politics; contraceptive risk-taking; youthful involvement in prostitution; the subculture of sky diving; and trust and the health care system. The 20-month program provides foundational training in sociological theory, methods and statistics, as well as substantive courses of interest. Students benefit from a professor/student ratio that guarantees access to support and feedback.

Applicants are required to have demonstrated competence, normally through course work, in classical and contemporary sociological theory, social research methods, and social statistics. Applicants must also have a minimum of 3.5 GPA on a 4.0 point system, over the past two years of full-time study (a minimum of 10 full-course equivalents or 60 units) of the undergraduate degree.
