Description:

Building on the Therapeutic Recreation certificate program, this additional year focuses on the concepts, theory and practical experiences related to leadership and critical thinking you will need to work with clients and enhance their quality of life through leisure activities. The leadership and communication skills you develop will help you encourage clients, who may have cognitive or physical impairments, to participate in activities.

This program includes a 320-hour practicum.

These courses are intended as guidelines. Speak to your guidance counsellor to see what courses are offered at your school.

Students must have at least 50% in English Language Arts 30-1 or 70% in English Language Arts 30-2 or equivalent; and 50% in Biology 30 or equivalent.

Students must provide a clear criminal record check (more than one criminal record check may be necessary during the length of your program, in accordance with work placement requirements), and an up-to-date immunization record. A health status questionnaire must be completed.

Students must have the physical and mental abilities required for lab and practicum experiences.

CPR–BLS Level C for Health Care Providers required before practicum experiences begin.

Mature students (age 19+) must meet all requirements except for the Grade 12 diploma.

You must provide proof of English language proficiency (ELP) prior to admission if English is your second language. Please see website for list of acceptable evidence of ELP.
