School's Out... (Which Means Work Is In!)
Here are a few pointers to help you find the perfect fit for you!
Every year, Confederation College students start looking for a summer job or internship to help them pay for next year’s tuition. Here are a few pointers to help you find the perfect fit for you!
Get a job in your field – You’ll be doing yourself a favour if you find a summer job that is in your field or at least related, even if it pays a little bit less than another position. That experience will pay off when you’re looking for a permanent job after graduation.
Stand out with a slick résumé – Don’t leave this to the last minute. Develop your résumé and even change it to emphasize work and life experiences more closely related to the job requirements. Make sure you read and adhere to what’s expected (page count, whether or not to include references, etc.)
Get references – Letters of reference from past employers and even teachers can help you get your next job. This is especially true if the letter is from someone in the same field. Give your contacts plenty of time to get back to you – at least a week, though two is ideal – and be sure to thank them when they complete it for you.
Be prepared long before your interview – Once you identify a potential job, research the company and learn more about the position immediately. Some companies may ask casual questions about why you’re interested when they call you to arrange an interview. Be prepared!
Work at school! – Confederation College offers summer work placements to returning students who demonstrate a financial need. Learn more about our summer employment program.
