TRU Study Abroad Ambassador Kiera here. Wondering why you should travel and get your degree at the same time? Well, for starters, Thompson Rivers University (TRU) in Kamloops, BC has 300 partner institutions in 40 countries, giving you the opportunity to study while living in the country you’ve always dreamed about. Our Study Abroad program is non-competitive and offered to students from all faculties, international and Post-Baccalaureate students. All that is required of an applicant is a minimum GPA of 2.5, successful completion of 1 full semester at TRU, and current enrolment in full time courses on campus. There are no language requirements to study; take this as an opportunity to learn a new language!

Students pay TRU’s tuition rather than international student fees which can vary between countries. In addition, every student who is accepted to participate on exchange receives a bursary from our Comprehensive University Enhancement fund, as well as the vast amount of scholarships students who study abroad can be eligible for. Cost of living is rather low in many countries, while there is the opportunity for part-time work in others, which assists with keeping costs even lower.

All courses taken abroad are taught in English, and unless otherwise requested will transfer back as TRU credits. Your GPA will not be affected as all courses are transferred back to your TRU record as PASS or FAIL. In addition, international experience looks great on resume and can set you apart from others in the eyes of an employer. Have the time of your life while finishing your degree!

If you’re unsure about spending a full semester abroad, TRU offers summer short-term sessions and field school opportunities. With field schools, you have the chance to earn credits toward your degree while traveling with a faculty member for 2 – 6 weeks. This is open to a wide range of students. You can study Anthropology in Romania, or languages in Japan or Germany to name a few.

Beyond field schools and the study abroad program itself, the Study Abroad centre supports the Career Education Department, assisting students participating on international co-op work terms. This gives you the ability to work in your desired career or field while completing an international experience at the same time!
