Let’s face it, balancing graduate studies with professional commitments is challenging, but making time to participate in the unique activities that take place at Thompson Rivers University is a vital part of the experience. Embrace this time in your life, and soak up the opportunities TRU has to offer.

Unwind in the Commons
The first stop for many grad students is the Graduate Student Commons, a collaborative student engagement space that was redesigned less than a year ago. Filled with natural light, the space adjacent to the Main Library is open via 24/7 secured access. The Commons is designed to allow quiet study as well as act as an informal gathering place, complete with kitchen stocked with complimentary coffee and tea. Long tables and nearby whiteboards are ideal for small groups, and a meeting room holds up to eight students. The Commons is also equipped with audio-visual equipment, making it ideal for presentations.

Clubs, events & activities
The TRU Students’ Union (TRUSU) represents the more than 10,000 students studying at TRU, providing them advocacy and entertainment to ensure they feel valued and supported during their educational journey. Whether it’s the annual Back-to-School BBQ, movie nights, the Common Voices Lecture Series, or the Last Class Bash, TRUSU plays a vital role in the vibrant culture on campus.

Three-Minute Thesis (3MT)
Held at TRU each spring, the 3MT is an international competition that allows each graduate student three minutes to explain his or her research before a live audience. There is $1,750 in prize money up for grabs and the winner advances to the Western Canadian finals.

Graduate Student Research Symposium
Organized annually by the Graduate Student Mentors, the symposium is a great way to network with peers in other departments, and is also just a great way to unwind and have fun.
