How To Pick The Right University For You

Three things to keep in mind when planning your academic future.

Save

  1. 1. Always a smart move: prioritize a place where your program is strong.
  2. No question, Concordia University should be at the top of your list if you’re interested in art and design, education, communication and media studies, accounting and finance, or psychology. Those programs rank in the 94th percentile or higher worldwide.

  3. 2. Go for a university that offers flexibility – because you might change your mind about your program.
  4. Admissions information officer Jacklin Lu, based at Concordia’s Welcome Centre, says students often change programs after first year. “Coming from high school, you haven’t been exposed to the same variety of subjects, inspiring professors, and students who have different ideas.” Those elements are bound to have an influence, which is all to the good, says Lu. “If you end up studying something you love, you’re more likely to finish your program and do really well.” At Concordia, it’s relatively easy to change programs, as long as your grades stay good.

  5. 3. The student experience counts for a lot – so do your homework.
  6. Factors like the number of students per-professor could make all the difference. At Concordia, the ratio is incredibly good: 27 to one. “That means the professors are really there for you,” says Lu. One of the best ways to look into the student experience is to attend a recruitment event like Open House. For international business major Hannah Kellett, hearing presentations on studying abroad and paid internships was key to her decision. Concordia shot to the top of her list once she got a sense of “all the extras.”

Lu’s advice for making the most of Open House: “Pick your top program and take a tour of that department, check out the facilities. Speak to the professors, talk to the students and ask questions.”
