Settling into your new life as a university student is an exciting time. Concordia recruiter Ayanna Ryan has four tips for making the most of the experience.

1) Attend orientation
Sign up for any and all orientation sessions available, including ones specifically for your Faculty or department. “You’re guaranteed to learn something new at each one and you may even end up meeting a lifelong friend,” says Ryan. Taking a tour is an excellent way to get the lay of the land so you know what to expect come September 8, the first day of class.

2) Find out about academic resources
Find out what’s available at the beginning of your time at university, so you can quickly access those resources when the time is right. Concordia has a Student Success Centre, complete with one-on-one tutors, study groups and workshops, plus a friendly community of professionals, peers and faculty who want you to excel academically.

3) Look into overseas opportunities
“There’s never an easier time in your life to go and have an international experience, than when you’re a student, because there are so many doors open,” says Ryan. “Take advantage of that.” Concordia International will help you study abroad, experience new cultures, and break out of your comfort zone.

4) Build in some balance
University life isn’t just about academics. A big part of the magic of these years is the experiences you have outside the classroom. Getting involved with student clubs and community groups is a great way to open yourself up to new people and projects. Who knows what you’ll discover?
