How to Score a Summer Job/Internship

Save

Summer is a great time to make some extra cash or get hands-on experience doing something you love. How can you find those opportunities, though? Keep reading to find out.

Spread the word
If you dream of being the next Anderson Cooper, Marie Curie or Nigella Lawson, tell everyone you know: your teachers, friends’ parents, that distant relative. It takes just one person who knows someone who knows someone else to hook you up with an awesome job or internship.

Have a polished résumé
A great résumé is often the key to getting your foot in the door, whether for a part-time job in a restaurant or a placement with a large company. At Humber, our Career Centre staff helps perfect students’ résumés, prep them for interviews and share on- and off-campus job, volunteer and internship postings. You can even submit your résumé online for review!

Use social media
Twitter and LinkedIn are great places to look for jobs. Follow companies you would like to work for, as well as job search companies like Talent Egg and Jobpostings. If you have never used LinkedIn, Humber’s Career Centre staff can help with that too!

Choose a program with an internship
Most of Humber’s 160 full-time programs include a co-op, work placement or internship to give you the real-world experience that employers look for. Many of our faculty currently work in their fields and have the connections to help you find a job. Visit www.humber.ca/programs-courses to pick a program that is right for you.
