The glorious days of late spring and early summer…it’s time to catch up on sleep and recover from a stressful, hectic year of classes, papers and exams. It’s not all fun and games, though. Have you thought about where you’re working this summer?

There is no better time to jumpstart your career than the summers in university. And who better to give advice to a new career-seeking student than a current student well versed in the world of internships and Co-operative Education (Co-op).

Jaime Oetter, a 3rd year Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) student at Thompson Rivers University, initially joined Co-op to access the diversity of industry jobs and graduate with real world career experience. The added bonus: Career Education helped to eliminate Jaime’s stress of finding a summer job.

Jaime’s best advice for job seeking students? “Never stop pursuing what you want. If you want a job in a specific industry, keep trying to make connections and network.” When it comes to your resume, don’t forget to keep it personal. For her unique resume, Jaime likes to let her personality shine through: “I like to be a bit creative and have a splash of purple on it, to help make it stand out.” Volunteering is also important to have your resume, says Jaime. Volunteering “shows employers that you are not only committed to your studies, but also your community.”

Summer job seeking doesn’t end when you submit your resume either; the interview is just as important. “My interviewing tips would be to dress up; when you look and feel your best, you will be more comfortable” says Jaime. And finally, after the interview is over, ask the interviewer how it went: “This is a chance for you to see what you could have improved on, and what you excelled in. Interviews are a learning process, and it is always good to try and improve each time.”
