Career Exploration with Thompson Rivers University

The question, “what do you want to do when you graduate” is probably the most dreaded question of all university students. For some of us, it’s as easy as always knowing what we wanted to do. For the rest of us, it’s a long windy road to figuring out our dream job. That’s where Thompson Rivers University’s Career Education department comes in.

If you’re just starting university, one of the best ways to commence the career hunt is to meet with a Career Counsellor. As members of TRU’s Counselling department, these talented individuals ask the right questions and know the right answers to connect your unique strengths and weaknesses to the right career path.

Utilizing various career aptitude tests, as a career counsellor would help you do, is a great first step. Once you have a grasp of what career fits you, the fun really begins. Depending on your program of study, you have a couple of options for career exploration; Co-operative Education, internships, practicums, just to name a few.

With over 300 TRU students participating in Co-operative Education, it is probably one of the most popular opportunities. Students apply knowledge and skills developed in the classroom to the practical work environment, enhancing both their academic and employment portions of their degree. This for-credit course combines on-campus study with paid work experience, and many times, it leads to a career post-grad.

Sometimes, all you need is a little extra support. Maybe you already know which direction you need to go, but just need help along the way. In addition to job postings, volunteer and internship opportunities, TRU’s Career Education department assists with interviews, resumes and even oversees a mentor program.

Navigating towards a career can be hard work; that’s why picking a university that supports you every step of the way is important. Make sure you love what you’re studying and where you’re studying.
