University admissions are one of the most confusing things to navigate: each university has different application deadlines and requirements, never mind all the other steps and hoops to jump through. At Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, BC, admissions are sorted into three separate (and simple) categories: Open, Limited and Selective. We promise that your admissions juggling act doesn’t have to be that complicated.

Open Admission is just that, “open.” Admission decisions are made on a first-applied, first-admitted basis for qualified applicants. Essentially, you need to meet the minimum academic requirements; if you need to upgrade, you can still start university and work with an Academic Advisor to determine your course plan. The Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Business Administration are all “open” at TRU. The Early Application Deadline is March 1st and the Regular Application Deadline is April 30th. Oh! And did we mention you can apply to some of these programs in Grade 11 for Early Acceptance?

Limited Admission programs admit students on a first-applied, first-admitted basis as well, but these programs have a limited number of seats. Moreover, these programs may require an admission interview, questionnaires, pre-testing, orientations or letters of reference. TRU’s Bachelor of Tourism Management or Architectural & Engineering Technology Diploma are two examples of limited programs. Application deadlines for these programs can vary, but seats can fill up fast so make sure to apply early.

Finally, Selective Admission encompasses competitive programs with a limited number of seats and pre-determined application deadlines, after which all applications are reviewed. Applications will be assessed using criteria that may include admission average standing, an admissions interview, questionnaires, pre-testing and letters of reference. Admission deadlines for selective programs vary and they’re considered hard, which means that applications received after the deadline will not be considered. The Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Animal Health Technology Diploma are two of the most competitive programs TRU offers; mark your calendars for their early deadlines: January 15th and February 15th respectively.

Whether you already know which program you want to apply to, or you’re just figuring it out, the best advice with any application is to stand out from the crowd and apply early. TRU started accepting applications on October 1st and it’s only $27.03 to apply. To find a full list of TRU programs and admission requirements, check out tru.ca/apply.

Good luck with your applications and may the admission decisions be ever in your favour!
