Are You Ready For Your International Adventure?

It’s that time of year again, when everyone is getting ready for another exciting school year! As an international student, you might be getting excited about the possibility of moving to Canada for school. Soon you'll be packing your bags, buying your tickets, and picking up guidebooks and maps. However, you might not be as ready as you think you are for your upcoming adventure. Here are the top three things to remember:
1. Be prepared for a lot of paperwork. As an international student you will have plenty of papers and forms to fill out, and much of it might be new or confusing. While that does sound stressful, don’t worry! The Canadian education system is one of the most diverse in terms of cultures and backgrounds. Most institutions will have an international office to help guide you through the process.
2. The best way to understand something is to experience it. All the books and videos in the world won’t supplement the real deal. Don’t be shocked to arrive at your chosen school only to find that things aren't exactly as they were described in books and online. Canadian culture is woven together from hundreds of cultures around the world. Having an open mind and saying 'yes' to new opportunities are the best ways to truly soak in Canada.
3. Meeting new people doesn't have to be a big deal. You might be going far from friends to travel across the world - it's a very scary thought! However, you are not alone. You will meet other international students who are in the exact same situation. There are tons of clubs and organized events around campus where students meet each other through shared interests and social atmosphere. Above all, don’t be afraid to say 'hi' and tell your story to others. Canada is one of the friendliest countries in the world and you are sure to make friends quickly by opening yourself up to conversation.
Your adventure is now in your hands. Be prepared, pursue experiences, and meet some great people along the way. You will never know where life can take you until you act and go there!
