The First Nations University of Canada Officially Opens the Indigenous Continuing Education Centre

On January 11, 2022, the First Nations University of Canada (FNUniv) announced its Indigenous Continuing Education Centre (ICEC). On June 23, FNUniv celebrated the official in-person grand opening of the ICEC on June 23, 2022 at the Regina Campus, delayed several months due to the pandemic. This centre, using a hybrid learning model, provides distinct Indigenous-focused non-accredited, short course programming for individuals, professionals, businesses, and communities, open to Indigenous and non-Indigenous people.

ICEC course offerings

Since its launch in January, the ICEC has evolved with an expansion of course offerings. In addition to the highly sought-after course, 4 Seasons of Reconciliation, ICEC added several new courses in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action related to Business & Education. Successful learners of the ICEC course offerings will earn digital credentials in badges, micro-credentials, and professional certificates through MyCreds.

Check out a sample of the kinds of courses that are currently offered:

Indigenous Project Management Professional Certificate

For the Indigenous Project Management Professional Certificate, you’ll earn badges in topics such as Project Management Essentials for Indigenous Communities, Managing Project Risk & Procurement and Contract Management, Governance and Sponsorship, and more!

Indigenous Mapping Workshop — Microcredential

The Indigenous Mapping Workshop and its strategic partners are dedicated to the development and advancement of culturally appropriate and inclusive geospatial technologies for Indigenous communities. Our work focuses on the generation and dissemination of decolonized resources in Geographical Information Sciences and Satellite Remote Sensing, their integration and application, to preserve and promote Indigenous land stewardship practices.

We provide training on several Geographical Sciences (GIS) tools including Google Earth Pro, Esri ArcGIS, satellite remote sensing with NASA and the Canadian Space Agency, computer coding, and so much more! This workshop takes place from November 21-23, 2022.

Indigenous Research Level of Engagement Tool — training module

The Indigenous Research Level of Engagement Tool (IRLET) aims to provide guidance to researchers and grant review committees who are involved in or are new to Indigenous research with guidelines on how to ensure a project proposal is being planned and executed in an appropriate manner.

The number of learners to successfully achieve a badge has been increasing since the initial course offering of 4 Seasons of Reconciliation. The badges, micro-credentials, and certificates are recognized within corporate Canada to enhance employability by up-skilling and growing competencies.

The Indigenous Continuing Education Centre has been developed to create greater access for education and micro-credentials that leads to new opportunities or connections with Indigenous culture and tradition.
