Personalize your international experience!

Your time in university is an opportunity to grow as an individual through multiple social, and academic experiences. It’s no surprise that your academic journey is important, but you don’t necessarily have to remain on campus in order to be successful.

At Laurentian University, students have the opportunity to complete either a semester or a full year abroad. With more than 250 universities worldwide that are affiliated to Laurentian, students can really personalize their international experience. This experience of cultural diversity provides great enrichment for all students and is critical in preparing you for the realities of the global workforce.

Students are really changing their perception of globalization. They are now realizing that their academic experiences are a small piece of the bigger picture of living, studying and perhaps working or volunteering in a foreign country. The knowledge that you will gain via their experience is truly invaluable as it helps share ideas, and fosters care and understanding of different cultures and ones own beliefs. Furthermore, those who participate on an exchange also become ambassadors for Laurentian University worldwide.

When students ask me about traveling abroad during their studies, I always encourage them to do it and to declare their interest in their first year. At Laurentian, students can travel abroad during the second or third year of their undergraduate degree therefore the first year of their studies is a perfect time to begin the process. Rest assured that you receive a lot of support throughout this process with the Laurentian University Global Opportunities (LUGO) office.

Here are a couple of helpful tips from Marika Robillard who completed an exchange at the University of Udine in Northern Italy.

  1. 1. Start learning the language
  2. 2. Look into getting all the necessary documents (LUGO will help you in this)
  3. 3. Explore the culture
  4. 4. Save, save and save!
