Opportunity Knocks!

Rejection in any form has never been described as fun. However, instead of rolling over and playing dead (so to speak), take this opportunity to explore your options. If you didn’t get in to your program of choice, find out what other academic adventure may be in store for you.

When I first started out in university I was convinced I would be an interior designer. Not just ANY interior designer, the BEST interior designer. Guess what, I didn’t get in. Life wasn’t all happy faces and giggles. I had to go home and tell everyone I knew, life wasn’t happening exactly like I’d planned. Unfortunately I hadn’t planned out option B, being so focused on option A.

Now six years later I am a graphic designer working for the University of Manitoba and I can honestly say I love my job. I never would have been able to tell you eight years ago that this would be my career path.

Try to have a crossroads plan. You never know what educational predicament you’ll end up in. It’s possible you will apply for two separate departments and receive an acceptance letter from both, one or neither. Try to set realistic goals, reach for the stars but have a safety net. Everyone’s safety net looks different. Some may pursue another faculty, while others take a month off to travel.
