5 simple tools to navigate challenging times at school

Trent University is renowned for its supportive learning environment and student satisfaction. Many of our students follow these 5 “DOs” in order to take control and thrive during stressful exam times.

DO take care of your body. All-nighters, binge snacking, and sitting for hours can take a toll on the body and add to your stress. Exercise is a great way to work off the jitters and get a boost of positive energy. The Trent Athletics Centre offers fitness equipment, intramurals, classes to keep you active, and healthy snacks, so you can take that motivation back to the books.

DO step away from your studying. Just like any muscle in your body, your brain needs breaks too! Thirty minutes of fresh air can help to reset your mind when you’re feeling cross-eyed. Trent’s natural settings in Peterborough are an excellent retreat, with the calming presence of the Otonabee River and 30kms of nature trails right at your doorstep.

DO keep perspective. Despite all of the pressures you feel, not getting an A+ is not the end of the world. Instead of focusing on the “what ifs” of potential failure, find the positive in every situation (we promise it’s there).

DO ask for help. You are not on a deserted island—there are resources out there for easing your academic or personal worries. Use them! Trent’s Academic Skills Centre offers fantastic study support, while Trent’s Counselling Services and student wellness workshops can help you tackle the stress that boils up during exam time.

DO remember to take a few moments to enjoy the little things. Whether it’s a favourite song, funny YouTube video, or a visit to Trent’s exam-time puppy room, sometimes you need to remind yourself that getting your education is a journey, not a destination. Enjoy the ride!
