How to Beat the Uni Blues

Being a student isn’t just about getting a degree. In this article, Ayah Aboukoura who is studying Pharmacy at Cardiff University in Wales, UK, shares her top tips for ensuring you enjoy student life.

With the pressure of earning your degree looming each year and the daunting end of year exams, it can become a very stressful time of your life. University is arguably a crucial period where you acquire lots of knowledge and skills. Yet many fail to recognize the importance of maturing as a person.

Joining clubs/societies will surely keep you motivated and allow you to meet people with similar interests. Such activities offered by the University’s Student Union encourage you to enjoy student life- it is always worth making use of the Union. Cardiff University’s Student Union spoils students for choice but also allows you to make your own club/ society. Don’t forget your “voice” really matters. If you aren’t happy with something mention it and be the voice of change. Your thoughts and suggestions are always welcome.

The Union also offers helpful services e.g. Cardiff Uni’s Jobshop which never fails to find you perfect part-time work. You could participate in open days and school visits. Uni Inspiration Day is Cardiff University’s highlight of the year attracting numerous prospective students. Besides being paid, you make several friends and gain many skills (more to add to your CV) making it even more worthwhile.

Last but not least… social life is imperative. As a student you will meet so many people and make really close friend- so why not spend time with them. Be as imaginative as you like: throw a surprise party; invite them for dinner; study together or just visit the city- Cardiff has lots to offer. Don’t feel trapped in the depressing cycle of a lonely student. Allow time to enjoy what you love most and keep yourself motivated. In the end stay on top of your studies and don’t forget why you are at University.
