Canadore College’s residence facilities are designed with you in mind. You’ll find many hard-to-find creature comforts in your room, including a full kitchen, flat screen television, Wi-Fi and more.

Three apartment-style complexes, all less than 10 years old, make up 600 beds and each first-year student is guaranteed a spot in residence. Vice-President of Student Services, Shawn Chorney, says that learners spend two-thirds of their time outside of the classroom and it’s vital to make them comfortable to support student success.

“With 60 per cent of our students relocating from outside of North Bay, a great many of them rely on our residence accommodations,” says Chorney. “This is where they come after a long day of class, or being on placement, or even working in the community. Our residences are not a merely home away from home, but rather ‘home’ for our students.”

Students also feel a sense of home through Residence life programs, which include a variety of community engagement and leadership workshops, service learning trips, and living learning communities that are run both by elected student representatives and residence staff.

Being away from family can come with its own set of challenges though. Canadore’s residence staffs a 24-hour assistance program for students experiencing difficulties. Employees are trained in safeTALK, a nationally-recognized suicide prevention and intervention program, and crisis support techniques.

The College was also the first in Canada to integrate the use of a mental health and wellness dog in residence. Three-year-old German Shepherd, Niijii, is an integral part of the Canadore’s student success strategy, helping to create a comfortable atmosphere and assisting students in expressing their emotions, de-escalating high intensity situations and reducing day-to-day stress and anxiety.
