Being involved and active in the community you live in is a vital component to your university education. To help highlight this, we asked a few current Lakehead University students why and how they become involved, and here is what they had to say:

Student Life
“Outside of class I am very active because I want to balance out my studies. I enjoy going to the gym (which is included in my student fees). In the winter I go snowboarding and snow shoeing. In the summer I enjoy hiking, canoeing, kayaking, camping, travelling, and playing soccer and volleyball. I can do it all either on or close to campus.”
–Allison Winmill, Forestry (Thunder Bay campus)

“Student life at Lakehead can only be described as awesome. I'm a part of the Equestrian team. I have met countless new friends and get to have new experiences that I would not get if I didn't involve myself—like travelling to Minnesota and Wisconsin to compete.”
–Nerhys Hall, Music (Thunder Bay campus)

Why Get Involved
“There are so many great opportunities to get involved at Lakehead. Whether you want to volunteer, work on campus or attend a campus event, Lakehead has it all! I found it important to be involved in student clubs and intramurals because it helps you gain life skills and memorable experiences at this time in your life. – Annalise Wendler, Education (Thunder Bay campus)

“The best part about getting involved at Lakehead is that it is so easy. Everyone is extremely welcoming and truly wants to create an enriching environment at the school. I have become a Director of Lakehead Student Alumni and a Student Ambassador to Lakehead. I have to do a lot of planning to balance this and my school work, but it’s always worth it.”
–Sneha Makkar, Arts & Science/Education (Orillia campus)

How to Get Involved
“I’m a member of Lakehead’s Association of Biology Students (LABS). Throughout the year we host a wide range of events – from an evening of watching “The Big Bang Theory” to playing laser tag on a weekend. This group allows me to meet other students in the same program as well as professors in Biology.” –Megan Westlund, Biology (Thunder Bay campus)

“Because I loved residence so much I wanted help provide other students with a similar experience so I became a house president in second year and now in third year I am a resident assistant.”

–Jess Warden, Kinesiology/Education (Thunder Bay campus)

Services and Resources “My student career was enriched by being a member of the LEAD volunteer program through the Student Success Centre (SSC). The SSC is an office staffed with amazing people to assist students with all their questions and make the university a more understandable place to live, learn and explore.”
–Sarah Scott, Natural Sciences (Thunder Bay campus)
