Students have officially begun the hunt for the best post-secondary school. Establish your presence by preparing students across Canada on how to make sense of prerequisites and application requirements, how to compile a good portfolio and what to include in a great application essay.

How do you stand out from the crowd of high school students in the university application process? There are prerequisites and application requirements and you might feel like you’re just a name on an application form. Finding the right university can be challenging. And once you’ve found that perfect fit, the application process can be complicated. Here are some tips to help make the process easier.

1. Summarize the requirements into a checklist that you can cross off as you go along. Check and double check all application requirements.
2. When writing your application essay, be yourself. Have confidence in your writing and in who you are. Be honest about your life and why you would be a good fit for your university of choice.
3. Talk about your extracurricular activities and all the ways you were involved in your high school. It is important for students to share more about their lives than simply their excellent academics.
4. Get in touch with your admissions counsellor or the admissions team at the universities you’ve applied to and check to see that your application arrived. This shows initiative and that you are proactive.
5. Get on the phone with your prospective university and ask questions. Email is great, though it can be slow at times because the admissions counsellors are travelling a lot. Calling is quicker.
