You’ve settled into life at University. Now you need to work on those study skills. How are you ever going to demonstrate all that you are learning in the classroom? HERE are some tips to make that happen!

First, you need to be an effective reader. Don’t just keep up with the readings. Try the SQ3R system. This acronym suggests a five steps system. They are: Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review. Not only will this help you engage with the material on an academic level it will also improve your memory.

Second, pay attention in lectures and get involved in classroom discussions. Nipissing University encourages interaction between students and professors to help you succeed in your studies! The more engaged and involved you are, the more likely you are to connect with and remember the material covered.

Third, take effective notes. Leave room on the page to go back and expand upon your notes. Don’t write down everything the Professor has to say. Has he or she paused to make a statement or repeated a statement?

Fourth, take the time to research the type of test being given. If you know the test is going to be largely multiple choice, Google some tips or look for a practice test.

Fifth, know your learning style. Do you study best in short bursts or in long sessions? In the evenings or the mornings, alone, in a quiet setting or in a group? Work with what works best for you.

Lastly, get plenty of rest. If you have been following these tips, you will gain more from a decent meal and good night sleep than an all-night cram session.

You are not alone! Visit Nipissing University’s student services for more help.
