A new year at high school has arrived, bringing you one step closer to university / college life. This is the year to make it count!

Start the year off right by reviewing and living by these proven study tips. Strong study habits will help make your year ahead a successful one and will help ensure you get the grades you’ll need to be accepted into that post-secondary program you are interested in:

  • First of all - show up for class!
  • Take notes. Even if you have access to a PowerPoint or other presentation – taking your own notes is more effective.
  • Pace yourself and take breaks.
  • Stay healthy! Get enough sleep. Drink water. Don’t skip a meal. Eat healthy snacks. Exercise – even ten minutes a day will pay off!
  • Join a study group.
  • Study in different places.
  • Turn off your phone, your TV and anything else that will distract you.
  • Don’t cram – study a bit every day. Retention rates are 60% higher if you review your notes within one day of taking them. Studying a bit every night stores the information in your long-term memory. If you cram – it only gets stored in your short-term memory.
  • Take time to treat yourself. Enjoy your weekends. Socialize with friends. Go to a movie. Read a book (not a textbook!). Just take some time to wind down!
